Every laptop stand guide, ours included, says to raise the screen to eye level. Do the arithmetic and that rule turns out to be borrowed from a monitor, it overshoots a laptop by about two and a half inches, and the stand you need is taller than almost anything the category sells.

Aim at the middle of the screen, not the top: a 14-inch laptop needs roughly 7.6–9.9 inches of lift at a normal viewing distance, and more like 9–11 if you sit close. Fixed stands are more rigid and cheaper but cluster around 6 inches; adjustable stands are the only ones that reach the top of that range.
If you type on the laptop itself, Z-shaped and single-arm designs can bounce. Solid one-piece stands stay planted.
