Monitors & Displays

The screen you stare at all day — sized and specced honestly.

The monitor is the single component you look at for eight hours a day, and it sets the ceiling on everything else: how much you can see at once, how sharp your text is, and whether an arm can hold it at eye level. We cover the displays themselves — portable second screens, desktop panels, and the specs that actually change how a workday feels.

Monitor marketing is unusually noisy: HDR badges that mean nothing at 300 nits, contrast ratios measured under conditions you'll never see, and refresh rates your work will never use. Our guides lead on panel type, real brightness, pixel density at the size you're buying, and what it takes to connect the thing to the laptop you already own.

The Best Gaming Monitors in 2026

A monitor advertising 1,000 nits and 360 Hz delivers 250 nits across a full white screen and 360 frames only if your GPU can render them. Six picks from $160 to $1,000, judged on sustained brightness, burn-in warranty cover, and what your graphics card can realistically drive.

The Best Monitors for a Home Office in 2026

The desk monitor you stare at for eight hours a day, judged on the three specs that decide it: pixels per inch at the size you're buying, how much dock is built into the back, and whether the stand does anything but tilt.

The Best Ultrawide Monitors in 2026

An ultrawide buys you width, not sharpness — a 34-inch 3440x1440 panel is exactly as crisp as a 27-inch 1440p screen. Six picks from $250 to $2,250, judged on pixel density, the weight number your monitor arm cares about, and what the ports actually do.

What Size Monitor for Your Desk: Width, Not Inches

A 34-inch ultrawide is no taller than a 27-inch monitor, a 32-inch has more screen area than either, and the deepest stand in this guide belongs to the smallest display. Diagonal inches are the one dimension that predicts none of that. Here is how to size a screen from the desk you already own.

What matters when buying

Pixel density, not resolution

1080p looks sharp at 14 inches and soft at 27. What matters is pixels per inch at the size you're buying — and how it compares to the laptop screen sitting next to it.

How it connects

A single USB-C cable only carries video if the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Check your laptop before you buy, or plan for HDMI plus a separate power lead.

Real brightness

Most portable panels sit at 250–300 nits, which is fine indoors and hopeless by a window. Anything claiming HDR under roughly 400 nits is a sticker, not a feature.

How it stands

A folio kickstand puts the screen well below eye level. Check for a proper built-in stand or a 75/100 mm VESA pattern before you count on mounting it.
